How does The Magic Blanket work?
Weighted blankets, like The Magic Blanket™ , have shown to generate proprioceptive input
on our bodies. For many people, this input causes the brain to release neurotransmitters like
serotonin, dopamine, among others. These neurotransmitters released by the brain have
naturally calming effects, which have proven to be benefitial for people experiencing sensory
integration disorder, anxiety, stress, Asperger's Syndrome, ADHD, and Rett Syndrome. It's
important to note that The Magic Blanket is not a substitute for care from an occupational
therapist or mental health professional.
How did you come up with name 'The Magic Blanket'?
Originally, we wanted to call our blanket "The Original Beanie Blanket." In 1998, we filed for
a trademark application for the name. Ty Corporation, the owner of the 'Beanie Babies'
brand imposed a cease and desist order. So we ceased and desisted. We then started calling
our weighted blanket 'The Original Bean Blanket." Over the years, we have heard many,
many wonderful stories from our customers about how our blanket worked wonders with
their children and themselves. And then we heard that several of our customers were calling
their blanket "their magic blanket." That's when it hit us. The effects of a weighted blanket
can work magic, so we changed the name to more accurately reflect how people feel about
our blanket.
Do you use beans in your blanket?
No. We use plastic poly pellets. Similar to what is used in a Beanie Baby. These plastic poly
pellets are hypo-allergenic and are high-heat tolerant, which means they can be dried in the
dryer as high as you'd like. Although, we recommend drying on low to medium heat, which
helps preserve the fabric texture.
How are the blankets made?
The fleece Magic Blanket is made with two panels of fleece -- a front and back panel creating
a six-inch-by-six-inch pocket. Each pocket is filled with a small amount of poly pellets and
then sewn closed with heavy duty thread.
For our cotton, flannel, minky and chenille blankets, the first thing we do is create an inner
liner made from cotton and constructed with two panels the same way as our fleece blanket.
We then cover the inner liner with an outer liner, which is made from either cotton, cotton
flannel or super-ultra-soft minky or chenille fabric. Unlike with our fleece blankets, there
are no visible seams.
How did you come up with the size of your blankets?
Our blankets are designed to be long enough to extend from the chin past the toes. And wide
enough to allow a person to move from side to side and not lose coverage while sleeping.
Many people frequently shift positions while sleeping. A blanket that is too narrow will shift
off the body when rolling from one side to the other, causing a loss of pressure on the body
and causing the person to wake. For children, we found that a very effective width was 36
inches and for adults, 42 inches.
Are these blankets durable enough to endure years of washing?
Yes. We use only the highest quality fabric and make them on heavy duty machines with
industrial strength thread.
Magic Blankets made with fleece or flannel can be machine washed with cold water on the
gentle cycle and dried on low heat in the dryer. The fleece will actually get even softer with
each washing.
Our super-ultra-soft chenille and minky blankets can also be machine washed with cold
water and washed on regular cycle. But we recommend these be line dried. We hang ours
over our stair banister overnight.
If I don't love my blanket can I return it for a full refund?
Yes, if it is a non-custom blanket. See our 100% Guarantee for details. Send us an email at
returns@TheMagicBlanket.net and let us know that you're sending it back. As long as it's in
"like new" condition, we'll issue you a full refund once we receive it. But you'll have to pay
for shipping.
How long will it take to ship my order?
If we have your Magic Blanket in stock, it will ship the same day or the next day, depending
on what time the order comes in. Orders that are not in stock will take anywhere from one
to two weeks to make.
How come you don't offer free shipping?
When a company offers free shipping all that means is that the price of the shipping is often
factored into the price of the product. So it really isn't free at all. Our prices are among the
lowest in the weighted blanket category. We do this by buying fabric and making blankets in
bulk with great care. And we'd rather have our prices be an honest reflection of what the
blanket truly costs, without additional mark up to cover shipping.
